When is a crown needed?
- A broken or cracked tooth.
- Extensive decay or a large filling that weakens the tooth.
- After root canal treatment, to protect the tooth.
- A worn or misshapen tooth that needs rebuilding.
Zirconia vs Emax
| Zirconia | Emax | |
|---|---|---|
| Main strength | High strength, stands up to chewing | Translucency closest to natural teeth |
| Often best for | Back teeth and high-pressure cases | Front teeth where appearance matters most |
| Note | May look less translucent than Emax | May not suit high-pressure areas |
The decision depends on your case, and we explain it during the consultation.
Treatment steps
- Examination of the tooth and gums, with X-rays if needed.
- Tooth preparation to receive the crown, with minimal removal.
- Digital scan or impression to make a precise crown.
- Temporary crown if needed.
- Fitting the final crown, bite adjustment and follow-up.
Treatment time and number of visits: one week.
Crown or veneer?
A veneer is a shell covering only the front surface, used to improve appearance. A crown covers the whole tooth and is usually used when the tooth is damaged. For details, read the page Hollywood Smile & Dental Veneers.
What about missing teeth? (bridges and implants)
If you are missing one or more teeth, there are two common options: a bridge, which is crowns on the neighbouring teeth holding an artificial tooth in the middle, and an implant, a replacement for the tooth root placed in the bone and topped with a crown. Each has advantages and limits, and we assess your case and explain which suits you. Implants are performed by a specialist colleague at the centre. I plan your case, take the X-rays and the digital scan needed, present the case to the implant specialist for the final decision, and follow up with you afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between zirconia and Emax?
Zirconia is usually stronger, while Emax is more translucent and natural-looking. We choose according to the tooth position and what suits your case.
Does the tooth under a crown die?
No, but it can still decay if it is not cleaned well, so care matters.
Can a crown be whitened?
No, the colour of a crown does not change with whitening, so we plan the colour before fitting.
How long does a crown last?
It depends on the material, the tooth position, your care and your habits.
